Age old problem preventing new developments? This sounds like a job for... Japan!
Shifty tiles bring walking to VR
"Researchers from the University of Tsukuba and ATR Media Information Research Labs in Japan have constructed a moving floor that allows the user to stay in place while walking in a virtual environment.
The device makes it possible to literally move through a virtual environment, and could be used to simulate operations like disaster evacuations, according to the researchers."

1TB storage on a CD-size disk?
If anyone can do it, it's Japan.
PS. If my calculations are correct, then this would be enough to record 20 days, 17 hours, 6 minutes and 9.706 seconds of video if it were at a constant rate of 600 KB/s (which it won't, but it's somewhat close to the average DVD quality). Three weeks of recording without even having to change the disk. Sweet. _________________ The first solar eclipse took place after Chuck Norris challenged the sun to a staring contest. Finally, a Car That Talks Back
| Quote: | Honda will soon become the first auto manufacturer to include, as standard equipment in some models, technology that enables drivers to converse with their cars about where to go and how to get there.
Using voice-recognition and text-to-speech technology from IBM, the 2005 Acura RL, available in October, and Honda Odyssey, available in September, will produce maps and "speak" turn-by-turn directions from the navigation system. Drivers will also be able to make phone calls or crank up the air conditioning, all while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. |
Reminds me of this, though. _________________ The first solar eclipse took place after Chuck Norris challenged the sun to a staring contest. Chuck Norris always wins. |

Sony developing TVs that zoom in on image
| Quote: | TOKYO -- Sony Corp. has developed a computer chip that allows viewers to zoom in on any part of a TV image, such as a favorite soccer player or an intruder on security-camera footage, while keeping the image sharp.
/----/
In the demonstration, an image of sprawling terrain remained sharp enough while zooming in to show that a tiny speck was actually a man walking, and a dark spot in the river was a hippopotamus. |
Meanwhile, the Brits made a robot that poops. _________________ The first solar eclipse took place after Chuck Norris challenged the sun to a staring contest. Chuck Norris always wins. |

Japan is largest exporter of measles to U.S.
They're killing off American bastards while maintaining peaceful relations! How grotesquely clever! _________________ The first solar eclipse took place after Chuck Norris challenged the sun to a staring contest. Chuck Norris always wins. |

And now for something completely different:
Japan awards mammoth pumpkin
| The Washington Times wrote: | The Akita Prefectural Government in Japan has given its Best Japanese Pumpkin Contest award to the grower of a 196-pound pumpkin.
"I want to show a pumpkin weighing more than 440 pounds (200 kilograms) in 2005," the 74-year-old Takahashi said. |

That reminds me of that scene from Van Wilder.

Upgrade your organic dog
| engadget wrote: | | This week’s How-To is something more of a glimpse in to the future, a future where your dog has a cell phone, webcam and electronic tag, and maybe even talks to you. Maybe. Some of this dog-tech isn’t available yet, and some of it is (oh, you Japanese…); our overview includes some interesting iterations of pet technology, and we even made our own version of a dog webcam along with the first ever canine photographer’s photo gallery. |

And here's one straight from the Apropos of Something:
Boyfriend's Arm Pillow
| Quote: | | Junko Suzuki, a radio DJ, demonstrates how she sleeps with a 'Boyfriend's Arm Pillow' in Tokyo Friday, Sept. 24, 2004. The pillow manufactured by linen maker Kameo Corp. consists of a headless torso and a stuffed arm that curls around the sleeper. It might make some people uneasy but have sold about 1,000 in Japan since the product went on the market last December. The maker says the pillow is not only an emotional comfort, but that its shape keeps the body balanced by supporting the sleeper from both sides. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara) |
